So, I never made it to take the kids to see Santa this year. We are intentionally trying not to make a big deal about Santa, but I did at least want to get the kids ' picture made with him. Unfortunately, the month got away from me. We ended up going to CFA Christmas Eve morning to get the kids' pictures made with Santa Cow. He was there when we got there - I went to get the kids' food - and I see a guy walking out carrying a large bag, which I am sure was the costume. Oops! Hopefully, the kids will not be too disappointed if they try to line up their Santa pictures through the years and realize I missed this one.

We had a birthday party for Judah and some of his buddies the Sunday after his birthday. I tried to come up with the games, etc. by myself and it was a lot. If it had not have been for all of our family that were in town helping out, it would not have gotten done. Thankfully, Judah had a good time. He has ranked the party games from his most favorite to his least favorite. No big shocker that the dinosaur relay (and the huge cereal box shoes) came in last. Oh well, things to keep in mind for next year.
I am toying with the idea of celebrating his half-birthday in June. His birthday is really close to Christmas, and he forgot most of the toys that he got by the time Christmas was done. It also made my plan for really focusing our family on Advent a little off. I guess I have time to figure out what to do.

There are no pics of my kids on Halloween because Judah got sick with a stomach bug the night before and was recovering on Halloween. We thought we had dodged the bullet with Harper until she got sick last night. She is currently under quarantine which has been difficult for her brother with his "can't live with her, can't live without her" playmate. Please pray for our family that the vomiting continues to hold off (I can only handle being directly thrown up on once a day) and that Judah stays well.

Raylrode Daze

John Mark was gone to Body Pump training for three days so I decided to venture out to Branchville for Raylrode Daze (I have no idea why it is spelled like that.) It was the first time going so I made several critical mistakes.
1) Listening to the three-year-old.
We got to town just as the parade was ending so we ended up having to walk a really good ways to get to the center of town. I did not bring the double stroller, because Judah has informed me multiple times that he does not like the stroller. This was a bad idea and I paid for it later.
2) Thinking that the heatwave was over.
It ended up being really, really hot (sweat all down your back, hair stuck to your head kind of hot), and I believe that Branchville was suffering from some strange infestation of gnats (kind of like Hitchcock's Birds but with gnats). Clouds of gnats everywhere! We didn't even get any fair food, because I ended up taking the kids to a restaurant in town that was air-conditioned. Just too hot.
3) Thinking that a small town like Branchville would not have ridiculously high prices for tickets.
Tickets were $1 apiece and each ride was at the minimum four tickets. Multiply that by two kids and it got out of hand quickly. After I had used up the $10 in tickets that I had purchased and the $8 in tickets random people had given me (told you it was hot), I decided to call it a day. At this point, Harper is shrieking because she does not want to get back in her stroller. Judah is shrieking because he wants me to give him $5 to play some kind of fish game in a kiddie pool (seriously?).
At this point, me and my two shrieking children began the mile-and-a-half trek back to our car. Judah is crying that he is hot and tired and can't take another step. Harper has passed out and is almost falling out of the stroller she is so asleep. We finally make it back to the van and I crank the air-conditioner way up!!!
The moral of this story is that I don't know that we will be going back for Railroad Days or Raylrode Daze or whatever it is next year. Not unless it is seriously 30 degrees cooler.

Judah started 3k at Saint Andrews in Orangeburg. He is only going three days a week for half a day, but he loves it so far! The first thing he asks me when he wakes up in the morning is "Do I have school today?" I was kind of sentimental the first day but Judah asked me if I could drop him off and let him go in his room by himself :-). He is getting to be such a big boy!

John Mark took Judah to a pediatric dentist for his first appointment. JM said he did great! The visit didn't get off to a great start because all of the chairs are in an open room. While Judah waited in a chair to be seen, the little boy in the chair next to him started screaming and had to be held down by two techs. JM said that Judah said very matter-of-factly, "I don't think I will have a dentist appointment today." Fortunately, JM was able to calm him down and the rest of the visit went fine.

There might be a huge mud puddle at the bottom and your youngest (who is going down the slide alone for the first time) might end up in the mud puddle head first. We signed Judah up for swim lessons at the Y. He had such a good time and wants to know when he can take classes again. He didn't have any trouble at all putting his face in the water and didn't mind jumping in the pool. The instructor would even help him to the bottom of the pool to pick up swim rings. I think the Y is going to have another set of lessons in September so hopefully we can get him signed up again.

Our parents were kind enough to keep the kids while we went to Virginia Beach for General Assembly. John Mark was in lots of meetings while we were there, but I did get to spend some time by the pool with some good books. After the conference, we got to spend the night with our friends the Hunters, who now live in North Carolina (so good to see them again). We also went to Williamsburg and Jamestown but only went in the free parts. It was so hot we couldn't stay that long. But we did get Judah a t-shirt. We both also had our first trip on a car ferry (see picture above).

We are beginning to like South Carolina beaches more and more. We made another trip to Isle of Palms when my mom was here. We had a good time. Harper went down to the water and back to the tent over and over again and then took a nap after she tuckered herself out. We are only about 45 minutes from Congaree National Park. It has taken us two years to visit but we recently took the kids. It was evening, so it was still kind of chilly. But we really enjoyed walking on the trail that they have set up through the swamps. I can't wait to go back when it is warmer (even though the mosquitoes may carry us off) and we can take our time going through all the different parts of the park.

In January, we went to Dunes Village in Myrtle Beach for vacation. It's right on the beach but also has two different indoor water parks. Thankfully, both of our moms were able to go with us and help with the kids. We had such a good time and can't wait to go again.
